It is to establish her character and demonstrate how she became the woman she is today.īut we are getting a bid ahead of ourselves here, so let us wind it back and give you some needed context. However, the point of this scene’s exchange is not to urge the audience into agreement with her deplorable principles. In this speech she glorifies materialism, murder, malicious lawbreaking, and seeing things only for their monetary value. The speech that Revy gives in this scene condones a lot of values that people like you and me would condemn. Right off the bat I have to say that the most common error made in judging this scene is assuming you are to agree with it, that the writers behind Revy are using her character as a prop to put their own opinions on a pedestal. However, despite its apparent qualities, I think there are some failures on the behalf of public reception when it comes to critiquing it. It has a memorably dark and gritty atmosphere, poetic dialogue, and tangible philosophical themes. This scene is lauded by many fans to be one of the show’s highlights, and for good reason. You are giving the audience little to work with in order to relate to your heroine, which will ultimately result in her being unmemorable.Ībove artwork and animation by Madhouse animation studio. The problem is not the archetype the problem is that the archetype is coming at the expense of the writing, where the character has no more depth than this description. Not only do I think that feminist friendly characters are perfectly acceptable, I honestly think that writers and directors should be encouraged to include them in their narratives. Let me be clear in stating that the problem that I have here is not the archetype itself. ![]() ![]() Not only do commentators routinely reduce the meaning of strength to something as antiquated as physicality, but they also strip these characters of any identifiable traits beyond this arbitrary description. The term in and of itself has become a meme of sorts, and reasonably so, as to reiterate, it is often misused. The term of strong female character is one that is ubiquitously used when critiquing action heroines like Revy, and often for the wrong reasons. Most importantly, none of it feels like the product of apathetic writing it is her responding naturally to changing circumstances the way a human being would. She is capable of being humorous and introspective, loud and subdued, flagrant and subtle, cynical and heartfelt. What strikes me the most about her writing is that she persistently has a dynamic and organic response to any storytelling scenario. This character is easily my favorite aspect of Black Lagoon, and is a large part of what endears the series to me. Above artwork and animation by Madhouse animation studio. ![]()
